ANDREA CONNELL FANTECHI<\/h1>\n

I have been following Andrea Connell Fantechi\u02bcs work for many years and can say confidently that he is without doubt the best young artist that I know. His style is hard to define but very distinctive and decorative, with its bold use of primary colour, its sharply delineated landscapes and its sensuous portraiture. Being a Florentine, Andrea is a classical stylist, but there are more modern influences in his work too — some of his almost-geometrical treatment of the built environment suggests Jeffrey Smart, and there is more than a hint of David Hockney in his sky-blue seascapes. Underlying his work I sense his yearning for the freedoms of his other homeland, Australia, with its wide horizons, its broad beaches and balmy summer air. One of his most poignant pictures depicts this life retreating from him through the window of an airliner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn his artistic course, Andrea Connell Fantechi has come up with a mingling of techniques between graphic design, photography and painting, and through the use of colour and evoking more than revealing those mysterious thought movements which pass through the mind and tread the paths of the soul. A contemporary artist, such as Connell Fantechi, often identifies himself with the object of his research and in his own thought content. His creations, therefore, are to be interpreted as structural elaborations in the attempt to capture concrete images of abstract thinking. A painter creates forms as does a sculptor. A painter and a sculptor create spaces just like an architect.\u201d

\u201cThe elements of Andrea Connell Fantechi\u2019s painting, accomplished in pure primary colours with flat backgrounds, illustrate an essential aesthetical exploration, and display marked references to the Pop figurative culture of American and British movements. In the first case, alluding to artists such as Alex Katz and Tom Wesselmann and, in the second, to certain pictorial solutions of David Hockney\u2019s , of which a hint may be noticed in one of Andrea\u2019s works, \u201cNocturnal Silences\u201d, where the realistic setting seems to take second place compared to the decorative flair in which the representation is carried out. The formal elements of the nearly empty room become the prime movers in an elegant geometrical-chromatic construction which, paradoxically, makes the \u201csensation of absence\u201d more concrete than what is communicated by the picture.\u201d

\u201cAndrea\u2019s painting is thought out and well-reasoned. As laborious as the realisation is, so is it polished and attentive to detail. Echoes of the style of American and British pop artists are present, but his images are far from certain matters of sociological denouncement. He keeps a deep bond with his own roots, and the illustrious, ideal Masters of the past. He has inherited the lesson from Renaissance giants such as Paolo Uccello and Piero della Francesca which he translates into a style of \u201cconstructed\u201d representation. Painting which tells a tale. It cannot be denied that, in all this, there is also a merging of his passion for the decoration of this pictorial construction which, at times, may remind us of the compositional rhythms of Persian and Indian miniatures\u201d.
